Arabic (العربية) is a Semitic language (Afro-Asiatic family), spoken in more than 20 countries across the Middle East and North Africa. It is written in the Arabic script: it is written right to left with 28 letters that join each other, and short vowels are usually not written.
English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
How Arabic and English compare
- Arabic is written in the Arabic script and English in the Latin alphabet, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Arabic is written from right to left, so the text you type runs in the opposite direction to English.
- Arabic and English come from different language families (Semitic and Germanic), so most words have no shared root.
- Arabic usually puts words in the order verb–subject–object, with the verb first; English uses subject–verb–object, so sentences are reordered in translation.
- Arabic is written right to left, while numbers are read left to right.
