Marathi (मराठी) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Maharashtra, where it is the official language, and Goa. It is written in Devanagari: each consonant carries a built-in "a" sound, other vowels are added as signs (matras), and a line across the top (shirorekha) joins the letters of a word. About 8.3 crore (83 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Hindi (हिंदी) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in northern and central India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi; it is the official language of the Union government. It is written in Devanagari: each consonant carries a built-in "a" sound, other vowels are added as signs (matras), and a line across the top (shirorekha) joins the letters of a word. About 52.8 crore (528 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Marathi and Hindi compare
- Marathi and Hindi are both written in Devanagari, so names and shared words look the same in the Hindi translation.
- Both are Indo-Aryan languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
- Marathi also uses the letter ळ, which standard Hindi does not, and Marathi has three grammatical genders (masculine, feminine and neuter) where Hindi has two.
