Assamese (অসমীয়া) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Assam, where it is the official language. It is written in the Bengali–Assamese script: consonants carry a built-in vowel, vowel signs (kar) attach to them, and most letters hang from a line across the top. About 1.5 crore (15 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Gujarat, where it is the official language, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It is written in the Gujarati script: it comes from the same family as Devanagari and works the same way, but has no line across the top of the letters. About 5.5 crore (55 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Assamese and Gujarati compare
- Assamese is written in the Bengali–Assamese script and Gujarati in the Gujarati script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Both are Indo-Aryan languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
