Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Karnataka, where it is the official language. It is written in the Kannada script: its letters are round and close relatives of Telugu letters, as both come from the same older script. About 4.4 crore (44 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Gujarat, where it is the official language, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It is written in the Gujarati script: it comes from the same family as Devanagari and works the same way, but has no line across the top of the letters. About 5.5 crore (55 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Kannada and Gujarati compare
- Kannada is written in the Kannada script and Gujarati in the Gujarati script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Kannada is Dravidian and Gujarati is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
