Tamil (தமிழ்) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and also Sri Lanka and Singapore, where it is an official language. It is written in the Tamil script: it has 12 vowels and 18 consonants, and a dot above a consonant (pulli) shows that it has no vowel. About 6.9 crore (69 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Tamil and Malayalam compare
- Tamil is written in the Tamil script and Malayalam in the Malayalam script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Both are Dravidian languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
