Assamese (অসমীয়া) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Assam, where it is the official language. It is written in the Bengali–Assamese script: consonants carry a built-in vowel, vowel signs (kar) attach to them, and most letters hang from a line across the top. About 1.5 crore (15 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Odisha, where it is the official language. It is written in the Odia script: most letters have a rounded, umbrella-like curve on top. About 3.8 crore (38 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Assamese and Odia compare
- Assamese is written in the Bengali–Assamese script and Odia in the Odia script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Both are Indo-Aryan languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
- Assamese, Odia and Bengali are closely related Eastern Indo-Aryan languages.
