English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Punjab in India (written in Gurmukhi) and Punjab in Pakistan (written in the Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi script). It is written in Gurmukhi: it has 35 basic letters (paintee), a line across the top, and vowel signs added to consonants. About 3.3 crore (33 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How English and Punjabi compare
- English is written in the Latin alphabet and Punjabi in Gurmukhi, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- English and Punjabi are distant relatives in the Indo-European family (the Germanic and Indo-Aryan branches), but most everyday words are different.
- English usually puts words in the order subject–verb–object; Punjabi uses subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, so sentences are reordered in translation.
