Telugu (తెలుగు) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is written in the Telugu script: its letters are round, and a consonant joining the next one is written as a small form below it (vattu). About 8.1 crore (81 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Punjab in India (written in Gurmukhi) and Punjab in Pakistan (written in the Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi script). It is written in Gurmukhi: it has 35 basic letters (paintee), a line across the top, and vowel signs added to consonants. About 3.3 crore (33 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Telugu and Punjabi compare
- Telugu is written in the Telugu script and Punjabi in Gurmukhi, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Telugu is Dravidian and Punjabi is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
