English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
Sanskrit (संस्कृतम्) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in India as a classical language of scripture, poetry, philosophy and scholarship, from which many Indian languages draw their vocabulary. It is written in Devanagari: each consonant carries a built-in "a" sound, other vowels are added as signs (matras), and a line across the top (shirorekha) joins the letters of a word. About 25,000 people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How English and Sanskrit compare
- English is written in the Latin alphabet and Sanskrit in Devanagari, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- English and Sanskrit are distant relatives in the Indo-European family (the Germanic and Indo-Aryan branches), but most everyday words are different.
- English usually puts words in the order subject–verb–object; Sanskrit uses subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, so sentences are reordered in translation.
