Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Gujarat, where it is the official language, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It is written in the Gujarati script: it comes from the same family as Devanagari and works the same way, but has no line across the top of the letters. About 5.5 crore (55 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Urdu (اردو) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in many parts of India, where several states give it official status, and Pakistan, where it is the national language. It is written in the Perso-Arabic script: it is written right to left, letters join each other, and short vowels are usually not written. About 5.1 crore (51 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Gujarati and Urdu compare
- Gujarati is written in the Gujarati script and Urdu in the Perso-Arabic script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Urdu is written from right to left, so the result runs in the opposite direction to Gujarati.
- Both are Indo-Aryan languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
