Hindi (हिंदी) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in northern and central India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi; it is the official language of the Union government. It is written in Devanagari: each consonant carries a built-in "a" sound, other vowels are added as signs (matras), and a line across the top (shirorekha) joins the letters of a word. About 52.8 crore (528 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Urdu (اردو) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in many parts of India, where several states give it official status, and Pakistan, where it is the national language. It is written in the Perso-Arabic script: it is written right to left, letters join each other, and short vowels are usually not written. About 5.1 crore (51 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Hindi and Urdu compare
- Hindi is written in Devanagari and Urdu in the Perso-Arabic script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Urdu is written from right to left, so the result runs in the opposite direction to Hindi.
- Both are Indo-Aryan languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
- In everyday speech Hindi and Urdu are largely understood by each other's speakers, as both grew from Hindustani. They differ in script and in formal vocabulary: Hindi draws more on Sanskrit, Urdu on Persian and Arabic.
