Telugu (తెలుగు) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is written in the Telugu script: its letters are round, and a consonant joining the next one is written as a small form below it (vattu). About 8.1 crore (81 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Odisha, where it is the official language. It is written in the Odia script: most letters have a rounded, umbrella-like curve on top. About 3.8 crore (38 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Telugu and Odia compare
- Telugu is written in the Telugu script and Odia in the Odia script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Telugu is Dravidian and Odia is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
